Funding

The long process of registration with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is in its final stages, but government subsidies may only be approved in 2024.

The subsidy is currently about R 7000 per student, but even then, only children who are documented, with certificates, will be considered. Many of the children in the informal settlements do not have this and even some of the South African children have not been registered yet. We are working hand-in-hand with the Department of Social Development, and social workers in the area, from Witkoppen Clinic. They are coming in to assist in getting these children documented. It is a long process.

Until the GDE approves government subsidies, Takane is fully funded by our generous donors. The Crossing Church has been a wonderful support. They have been instrumental in terms of helping with the infrastructure, renovating the kitchen, and putting new toilets in for the school. We will continue to explore and promote fundraising initiatives.

The type of learners at Takane are mostly from very under-privileged backgrounds. If the family does not have a loaf of bread on the table, it is impossible to ask for even R 200 as a fee. The school enters into an agreement with the parents that those who can make any payment (up to R 300), will do so when they can.

In between, as families we come together, and whoever can will contribute something to put on the table. We are very transparent with the teachers and there are some months when there isn’t much.
